چکیده

In this paper, we consider distributed versions of a modified shifting bottleneck heuristic for complex job shops. The considered job shop environment contains parallel batching machines, machines with sequence-dependent setup times and reentrant process flows. Semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities are typical examples for manufacturing systems with these characteristics. The used performance measure is total weighted tardiness (TWT). We suggest a two-layer hierarchical approach in order to decompose the overall scheduling problem. The upper (or top) layer works on an aggregated model. Based on appropriately aggregated routes it determines start dates and planned due dates for the jobs within each single work area, where a work area is defined as a set of parallel machine groups. The lower (or base) layer uses the start dates and planned due dates in order to apply shifting bottleneck heuristic type solution approaches for the jobs in each single work area. We conduct simulation experiments in a dynamic job shop environment in order to assess the performance of the heuristic. It turns out that the suggested approach outperforms a pure First In First Out (FIFO) dispatching scheme and provides a similar solution quality as the original modified shifting bottleneck heuristic. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Simulation-based assessment of machine criticality measures for a shifting bottleneck scheduling approach in complex manufacturing systems

In this paper, we describe adaptation techniques for a hierarchically organized multi-agent-system (MAS) applied to production control of complex job shops. The system architecture of the production control system is based on three different control layers. The mid layer implements a distributed shifting bottleneck type solution procedure. The shifting bottleneck heuristic decomposes the overal...

A multi Agent System Based on Modified Shifting Bottleneck and Search Techniques for Job Shop Scheduling Problems

This paper presents a multi agent system for the job shop scheduling problems. The proposed system consists of initial scheduling agent, search agents, and schedule management agent. In initial scheduling agent, a modified Shifting Bottleneck is proposed. That is, an effective heuristic approach and can generate a good solution in a low computational effort. In search agents, a hybrid search ap...

Scheduling Batch Processing Machines in Complex Job Shops

This paper considers a complex job shop problem with reentrant flow and batch processing machines. A modified shifting bottleneck heuristic (MSB) is considered for generating machine schedules to minimize the total weighted tardiness. We observe that the MSB could produce infeasible schedules where cyclic schedules are found. A cycle elimination procedure is proposed to remove the possibility o...

Applying machine based decomposition in 2-machine flow shops

The Shifting Bottleneck (SB) heuristic is among the most successful approximation methods for solving the Job Shop problem. It is essentially a machine based decomposition procedure where a series of One Machine Sequencing Problems (OMSPs) are solved. However, such a procedure has been reported to be highly ineffective for the Flow Shop problems (Jain and Meeran 2002). In particular, we show th...

A Fluid Heuristic for Minimizing Makespan in Job Shops

We describe a simple online heuristic for scheduling job shops. We assume there is a fixed set of routes for the jobs, and many jobs, say N , on each route. The heuristic uses safety stocks and keeps the bottleneck machine busy at almost all times, while the other machines are paced by the bottleneck machine. We perform a probabilistic analysis of the heuristic, under some assumptions on the di...
